Free proxies: a freebie or a headache?
Okay, friends, let's talk about free proxies β the ones that everyone is looking for, but then complains that nothing works. I've fallen for this more than once: I seem to have found a fresh list, set it up, but it either slows down or doesn't load at all. But if you know a couple of tricks, you can at least use it somehow.
What is it anyway?
Roughly speaking, these are other people's servers through which you can access the Internet so that your real IP does not shine. Like disguise, only cheap (or free). There are different ones: HTTP, HTTPS, SOCKS β but to be honest, the average user doesn't give a damn about the difference. The main thing is that it works.
Why are they needed?
Well, there are a lot of options: to bypass a site block at work or school, to see what a site looks like for another country, or just to troll someone anonymously (although I don't approve of this, of course). They are also used for parsing, but here you need to understand that free proxies for this are like a bicycle for transporting furniture: in theory, you can, but in practice, it's painful.
What are they and how not to screw up?
Public ones are the most popular and the most unreliable. Everyone uses them, so they either lag or are already banned. There are also "elite" ones (in quotes, because nothing elite is free) - they are better, but harder to find. Advice: if you take a free proxy, make sure that it is at least a couple of days old. Otherwise, you risk connecting to something that is already dead. Where are they used and when is it better not to get involved? If you just need to go to a blocked site once - ok, try it. But if you are going to do something serious (for example, automate actions or work with important data), don't even think about it. Once I tried to upload a file to the server through a free proxy - in the end it went nowhere, and I had to download it again.
Conclusion: worth it or not?
To be honest, free proxies are a lottery. Sometimes you get lucky, but more often you just waste your time. If you need something reliable, itβs better not to suffer and take normal ones. For example, we have inexpensive options on ProxyElite.biz, which at least wonβt fall off at the wrong moment. But if you just want to poke around, go for it, just donβt be surprised if it glitches.
